Now in its 3rd year – Wild Night Out (WNO) has become Britain’s national day of adventure, promoting the benefits of getting outside
People of all ages and abilities are encouraged to get outside. You could go for a walk, kayak down a river, explore a National Park, jump in muddy puddles, go Geocaching, get on your bike, climb a tree, try something new…the possibilities are endless! And when darkness falls, the fun can continue with a night out under the stars. Why not pitch a tent in your garden or try wild camping with friends.
Recently there has been a lot of talk of the levels of obesity in the UK particularly amongst children. But what is just as frightening is that 1 in 9 children have not been out to a natural wild environment within the last 12 months (Natural England).
Ordnance Survey #GetOutside Champion and explorer, Belinda Kirk, started Wild Night Out in 2016.
After 20 years of taking people of all ages into the wilderness, she understands first-hand the positive impact that adventure can have on people’s lives. Now Wild Night Out is supported by some of the biggest names in adventure including Sir Ranulph Fiennes (Patron) and Ordnance Survey
Over 2500 people have taken part in the past 2 years and in the process have raised over £40,000 for youth adventure charities. Those who have taken part have participated in a wide range of activities, but the most common have been hiking, cycling and camping.
The organising team have asked for your help to – Participate, Share & Encourage Others. In their own words:
- Please plan an adventure between 29th June and 1st July (or thereabouts). Please invite friends and family to join you, especially those who might not ordinarily get outside.
- Please sign up to our infrequent newsletter (approx. 4-5 per year) to get ideas and inspiration before the weekend (and remind you of the date each year)
- Please share your Wild Night Out adventures on social media using #WildNightOut2018 #GetOutside. When posting on Facebook please ensure your post is set to ‘Public’
- Please encourage others to participate in Wild Night Out and to share the highlights of their adventures. The best photos, films or blogs will win £100s vouchers for Boden or Ellis Brigham Mountain Sports
This is a great thing to do with your Grand Children. You don’t have to take them out onto a mountain, why not camp out on the lawn or let them stay up and go to a ‘Dark Sky’ area and spend the night star-gazing. The opportunities are endless so think something up and take part.
