Map Reading & Navigation

This is a series of tutorials on Map Reading and Navigation.  They are not a definitive study but more of an introduction to the subject.

We live in a world of electronic gadgets that claim to be able to help us find our way when out in the hills.  However, there is no substitute for a traditional map and compass.  In fact I would go so far as to say, that unless you can use a map and compass, then do not venture into the wilderness.  Not even on clear footpaths such as Snowdon and Scafell Pike.

There is nothing better than practical training and this can be done based on my tutorials or by signing up to one of the excellent courses run throughout the country.  A quick Google search will highlight which ones are available in your area.

I was taught map reading and navigation from the age of 10 years.  It has been an integral part of my life ever since, both as a pastime and in my 30 year military career.  I have taught navigation to hundreds of people since I was in my late teens and still continue to do so.
